In industrial pipeline systems, flange selection is crucial, and balancing the corrosion resistance and strength of flanges is a key challenge in the selection process. Corrosion resistance is related to the service life of flanges in specific media environments, while strength ensures that flanges can withstand the pressure and external forces of pipeline systems, both of which are indispensable. Below, we will elaborate on how to balance these two aspects from multiple perspectives.

Deeply understand the characteristics of the medium and operating conditions

Accurately analyze the composition of the medium

The corrosion mechanism and degree of flange materials vary significantly among different media. For example, sulfuric acid transported in the chemical industry can form oxide films on the surfaces of iron and aluminum due to its strong oxidizing properties, which has a certain passivation effect; However, dilute sulfuric acid has no such effect and is highly corrosive. The media in the petroleum industry may contain corrosive substances such as hydrogen sulfide and chloride ions. When selecting, it is necessary to accurately grasp the composition of the medium, and use this as a basis to choose corrosion-resistant materials. For conveying media containing chloride ions, 316 stainless steel has stronger corrosion resistance than 304 stainless steel due to its molybdenum content, making it more suitable for such environments.

Accurately grasp the concentration of the medium

The concentration of the medium directly affects corrosiveness, and the higher the concentration of most corrosive media, the stronger the corrosiveness. Like hydrochloric acid, a 20% concentration of hydrochloric acid has a much faster corrosion rate on carbon steel than a 10% concentration. Meanwhile, changes in concentration may alter the corrosion mode of the medium on the material. So, the selection should be based on the actual concentration of the medium. When the concentration fluctuates greatly, the highest concentration should be considered to ensure the corrosion resistance of the flange.

Clearly define the temperature and pressure of the medium

Temperature and pressure can alter the physical and chemical properties of the medium, thereby affecting its corrosiveness. An increase in temperature will accelerate chemical reactions and intensify corrosion, such as the enhanced oxidation corrosion of metals by water vapor at high temperatures. The increase in pressure makes it easier for the medium to penetrate into the flange sealing surface and the interior of the material, leading to intensified corrosion. Moreover, high temperature and high pressure environments require higher mechanical properties for flange materials. When selecting, it is important to ensure that the selected material can withstand the corresponding temperature and pressure while also having good corrosion resistance. For example, in petrochemical steam pipelines with high temperature, high pressure, and corrosive media, chromium molybdenum steel flanges are a suitable choice due to their excellent high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance.

Reasonable selection of flange materials

Applicable scenarios and limitations of carbon steel flanges

Carbon steel flanges have low cost, high strength, and good processing performance, and are suitable for conveying general non corrosive or weakly corrosive media such as water, air, steam, etc. However, when faced with media containing corrosive components, carbon steel flanges are prone to rusting and perforation, which affects their sealing performance and service life. Therefore, when the medium is highly corrosive, carbon steel flanges are generally not selected unless effective anti-corrosion measures are taken.

Comprehensive consideration of stainless steel flanges

Stainless steel flanges have good corrosion resistance and are widely used. 304 stainless steel has general corrosion resistance and is suitable for most neutral and weakly corrosive media; 316 stainless steel, due to its molybdenum content, has strong resistance to chloride ion corrosion and is suitable for environments containing chloride ions; 316L stainless steel is an ultra-low carbon stainless steel with better intergranular corrosion resistance, suitable for occasions with higher requirements for corrosion resistance. However, the strength of stainless steel flanges may be relatively low compared to alloy steel flanges, and their strength needs to be evaluated to determine if it meets the requirements in high-pressure or high external force applications.

Performance advantages of alloy steel flanges

Alloy steel flanges are made by adding alloy elements to carbon steel to improve corrosion resistance and other properties. Chromium molybdenum steel flanges have good high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance, and are suitable for applications with high temperature, high pressure, and certain corrosive media, such as high-temperature steam pipelines and catalytic cracking units in the petrochemical industry. But the cost of alloy steel flanges is high and the processing difficulty is relatively high. When selecting, cost and performance should be comprehensively considered, and materials with high cost-effectiveness should be chosen as much as possible while meeting the requirements of corrosion resistance and strength.

Special applications of non-metallic flanges

For highly corrosive media such as concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid, metal flanges may not meet the corrosion resistance requirements, and non-metallic flanges can be considered at this time. Common non-metallic flange materials include polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), etc. They have excellent corrosion resistance but relatively low strength, and are generally suitable for low-pressure, small-diameter pipeline systems. When using non-metallic flanges, ensure that the pressure and size of the pipeline system are within their applicable range.

Optimize flange structure design

Reasonably choose flange type

Different types of flanges have different characteristics in terms of strength and corrosion resistance. Flat welding flanges have a simple structure and low cost, but their strength and sealing performance are relatively poor, making them suitable for situations with low pressure and weak corrosiveness of the medium; Welding flanges have high strength and good sealing performance, suitable for high temperature, high pressure, and highly corrosive media, but they are difficult to process and costly. When selecting, it is necessary to choose the flange type reasonably based on factors such as pressure, temperature, and corrosiveness of the pipeline system. While meeting the requirements of strength and corrosion resistance, cost and processing feasibility should also be taken into account.

Optimize the flange sealing form

The sealing form of the flange can also affect its corrosion resistance and strength. Flat sealing flanges have a simple structure, easy processing, and low cost, but their sealing performance is poor, making them suitable for situations with low pressure and weak corrosiveness of the medium; The convex sealing flange has good sealing performance and is suitable for situations with moderate pressure and medium corrosiveness; The sealing performance of the tenon groove surface sealing flange is excellent, suitable for high-pressure and highly corrosive media, but it requires high processing accuracy and high cost. When selecting, the appropriate sealing form should be chosen based on the corrosiveness and pressure conditions of the medium, ensuring the sealing effect while improving the corrosion resistance and overall strength of the flange.

Take effective protective measures

Surface treatment enhances performance

Surface treatment of flanges is an effective method to improve their corrosion resistance. Galvanizing treatment can form a zinc layer on the surface of the flange, which serves as a sacrificial anode protection and slows down corrosion; Nickel plating treatment can improve the surface hardness and corrosion resistance of flanges; Spraying anti-corrosion coating can form a dense protective film on the surface of the flange, isolating the medium from contact with the flange and preventing corrosion. However, surface treatment may affect the dimensional accuracy and surface roughness of the flange, thereby affecting its strength and sealing performance. Therefore, when performing surface treatment, appropriate treatment methods and process parameters should be selected to ensure that the treated flange has good corrosion resistance and meets strength and sealing requirements.

Regular maintenance and inspection to ensure safety

Regular maintenance and inspection are crucial during the use of flanges. Regularly inspect the flange surface for corrosion, rust, damage, leakage, etc. on the sealing surface. For problems discovered, timely measures should be taken to deal with them, such as replacing severely corroded flanges, repairing sealing surfaces, etc. At the same time, a comprehensive maintenance file should be established to record the usage, maintenance time, and handling measures of the flange, providing reference for subsequent selection and maintenance. Through regular maintenance and inspection, corrosion problems can be detected and dealt with in a timely manner, extending the service life of flanges and ensuring the safe operation of pipeline systems.

The corrosion resistance and strength of balanced flanges need to be comprehensively considered from multiple aspects. By deeply understanding the characteristics and operating conditions of the medium, selecting flange materials reasonably, optimizing flange structure design, and taking effective protective measures, the corrosion resistance of the flange can be improved while meeting the strength requirements of the pipeline system, ensuring safe and reliable operation of the flange under various operating conditions.
