In industrial pipeline systems, flange selection is crucial as a key component for connecting pipelines, valves, pumps, and other equipment. And the corrosiveness of the medium is one of the key factors that must be considered in the flange selection process, because different media have different degrees of erosion on the flange material. If the selection is improper, it may lead to flange leakage and damage, thereby affecting the safe and stable operation of the entire system. The following will elaborate on how to consider the corrosiveness of the medium when selecting flanges.

Understand the characteristics of the medium

Clarify the composition of the medium

Firstly, it is necessary to understand the chemical composition of the medium transported in the pipeline, including the main components and possible impurities. For example, in the chemical industry, the medium of transportation may be various acid, alkali, salt solutions, such as sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide solution, etc; In the petroleum industry, the medium may contain corrosive substances such as hydrogen sulfide and chloride ions. The corrosion mechanism and degree of flange materials vary greatly among media with different compositions. Taking sulfuric acid as an example, concentrated sulfuric acid has strong oxidizing properties and can form a dense oxide film on the surface of metals such as iron and aluminum under certain conditions, thereby passivating and slowing down corrosion; However, dilute sulfuric acid does not have this passivation effect and has strong corrosiveness to metals.

Master the concentration of the medium

The concentration of the medium is also an important factor affecting corrosiveness. Generally speaking, for most corrosive media, the higher the concentration, the stronger the corrosiveness. For example, hydrochloric acid has different corrosion rates on carbon steel at different concentrations, and a concentration of 20% hydrochloric acid has a much faster corrosion rate on carbon steel than a concentration of 10% hydrochloric acid. Therefore, when selecting, it is necessary to choose the appropriate flange material based on the actual concentration of the medium.

Determine the temperature and pressure of the medium

Temperature and pressure can affect the physical and chemical properties of the medium, thereby affecting its corrosiveness to flanges. An increase in temperature will accelerate the rate of chemical reactions and exacerbate corrosion. For example, at high temperatures, the oxidation and corrosion of metals by water vapor will be enhanced. Pressure can also have an impact on corrosion. In high-pressure environments, the medium is more likely to penetrate into the flange sealing surface and material interior, leading to increased corrosion. At the same time, high temperature and high pressure environments also place higher demands on the mechanical properties of flange materials, requiring the selection of materials that can withstand corresponding temperatures and pressures and have good corrosion resistance.

Choose the appropriate flange material

Carbon Steel Flange

Carbon steel flanges have the advantages of low cost, high strength, and good processing performance, and are suitable for conveying general non corrosive or weakly corrosive media such as water, air, steam, etc. However, for media containing corrosive components, carbon steel flanges are prone to corrosion, leading to surface rusting, perforation, and other issues that affect sealing performance and service life. Therefore, in cases where the medium is highly corrosive, carbon steel flanges are generally not selected.

Stainless steel flange

Stainless steel flanges have good corrosion resistance and are widely used in industries such as chemical, petroleum, and food. Common stainless steel materials include 304, 316, 316L, etc. 304 stainless steel has good resistance to general corrosion and is suitable for most neutral and weakly corrosive media; 316 stainless steel has added molybdenum element on the basis of 304 stainless steel, which has stronger corrosion resistance, especially good resistance to chloride ion corrosion, and is suitable for media environments containing chloride ions; 316L stainless steel is an ultra-low carbon stainless steel with better intergranular corrosion resistance, suitable for occasions with higher requirements for corrosion resistance.

Alloy steel flange

Alloy steel flanges are made by adding one or more alloying elements to carbon steel to improve its corrosion resistance and other properties. For example, chromium molybdenum steel flanges have good high temperature and corrosion resistance, and are suitable for applications with high temperature, high pressure, and corrosive media, such as high-temperature steam pipelines and catalytic cracking units in the petrochemical industry.

Non metallic flange

For some highly corrosive media, such as concentrated sulfuric acid, concentrated nitric acid, etc., metal flanges may not meet the corrosion resistance requirements. In this case, non-metallic flanges can be considered. Common non-metallic flange materials include polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), etc. These non-metallic materials have excellent corrosion resistance but relatively low strength, and are generally suitable for low-pressure, small-diameter pipeline systems.

Consider the sealing form of the flange

Flat sealing flange

The sealing surface of the flat sealing flange is flat, with a simple structure, easy processing, and low cost. But the sealing performance is relatively poor, suitable for situations with low pressure and weak corrosiveness of the medium. When the medium is highly corrosive, the sealing surface of the flat sealing flange is prone to corrosion, leading to leakage.

Convex sealing flange

The sealing surface of the convex sealing flange is convex, and when used in conjunction with the matching concave gasket, it has good sealing performance. Suitable for situations with moderate pressure and medium corrosiveness. When choosing a convex sealing flange, attention should be paid to the selection of gasket material to ensure that the gasket has good corrosion resistance and sealing performance.

Sealing flange with mortise and tenon groove surface

The sealing surface of the tenon groove sealing flange is composed of tenon and groove surfaces, with excellent sealing performance, suitable for high-pressure and highly corrosive media applications. The sealing flange with mortise and tenon groove requires a high compression capacity for the gasket, and it is necessary to choose the appropriate gasket material and thickness to ensure the sealing effect. At the same time, the machining accuracy requirements for the sealing flange of the tenon groove surface are also high, and the cost is relatively high.

Other precautions

surface treatment

For some flanges used in corrosive media, surface treatment can be carried out to improve their corrosion resistance. Common surface treatment methods include galvanizing, nickel plating, and spraying anti-corrosion coatings. Galvanizing treatment can form a layer of zinc on the surface of the flange, which serves as a sacrificial anode protection and slows down the corrosion of the flange; Nickel plating treatment can improve the hardness and corrosion resistance of the flange surface; Spraying anti-corrosion coating can form a dense protective film on the surface of the flange, isolating the contact between the medium and the flange, thereby preventing corrosion.

Regular maintenance and inspection

During the use of flanges, regular maintenance and inspection should be carried out to promptly detect and address corrosion issues. The inspection includes checking whether there is corrosion or rust on the flange surface, and whether there is damage or leakage on the sealing surface. For problems discovered, timely measures should be taken to deal with them, such as replacing severely corroded flanges, repairing sealing surfaces, etc., to ensure the normal use of flanges and the safe operation of the system.

In short, when selecting flanges, fully considering the corrosiveness of the medium is the key to ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the pipeline system. By understanding the characteristics of the medium, selecting appropriate flange materials, considering sealing forms, and implementing surface treatment and regular maintenance measures, the corrosion resistance of the flange can be effectively improved, its service life can be extended, and the occurrence of leakage accidents can be reduced.
